Daily Ayurvedic Rituals

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian philosophy known as The Science of Life. These teachings date back 5000 years and were originally written in Sanskrit. In these ancient texts are taught the science of self healing in the form of daily rituals.

Some of these healing techniques are not really realistic to the everyday person but there are some that are.  The 4 main ones that I like to include in my daily or weekly routine and their benefits are listed below:

Drinking warm lemon water:  Alkalizes the body, detoxifies, freshens breath, aids in digestion, improves immune system, fights cancer, clear skin, hydrates the lymphatic system and purifies blood.

Tip: Take daily with with a tablespoon of black strap molasses for your daily dose of calcium, iron, potassium, copper and magnesium. Drink every morning.

Oil Pulling: Whitens teeth, prevents bad breath, strengthens teeth and gums, detoxifies body, prevents cavities and gingivitis and boosts immune system.

Tip: Use extra virgin, cold pressed, organic coconut oil. Swish in mouth for no less than 20 minutes and spit in trash, it may clog drains. I usually do it in the shower and you forget your doing it.

Tongue Scraping: Removes toxins from tongue, eliminates bad breath, improves dental health, aids digestion and detoxifies body.

Tip: Invest in a U-shaped stainless steel tongue scraper. You can find them at he local health food store and they are about $7.

Dry Brushing: Improves circulation, exfoliates dead skin, releases fatty deposits under skin, increases muscle tone, eliminates toxins and increases lymphatic drainage.

Tip: Buy a dry brush that has a removable handle and gently buff in a circular motion towards the heart. Available at health food stores.

These are some easy routines you can slowly incorporate into your daily routine to improve your health and detoxify the body. Remember, It takes 21 days to form a habit and 100 days to make that habit automatic!

Back to Basics

Ditch the chemicals people! Over 80% of everything we put on our skin is absorbed into our blood stream. It’s pretty scary these days what is in our beauty products . Most of which you can’t even spell.  Lets take a look at the things that we need to eliminate NOW!!

sodium lauryl sulfate: (industrial de-greaser) shampoo, face/body wash, toothpaste (irritant)

parabens :a preservative in many products (endrocrine disruptor)

coal tar: dye ( banned in Europe) contains heavy metals, carcinogen

phthalates: fragrance (infertility, neurodevelopmental disorders)

BHA and BHT: exfoliants and perfume ( endocrine disruptors, carcinogen)

DEA: soaps, shampoos and cleansers (irritant, carcinogen)

triclosan: antibacterial products (endocrine disruptors, reproductive issues)

fluoride: toothpaste/water  (neurotoxin)

polyethylene: scrubs and body wash

perfumes: everything (cancer and neurotoxicity)

formaldehyde: nail polish  (preservative)

oxybenzone: sunscreen (endocrine disruptors)

hydroquinone:  face creams

These are just to name a few. Many of these chemicals are carcinogens and neurotoxins and some can even interfere with reproductive health. Others can contribute to allergies, asthma , ADHD and a myriad of other issues.

If you cant pronounce it then why should we trust it to be put on our skin? These  chemicals are completely unnecessary. There are so many amazing vegan, all natural companies out there that have our backs.  Pacifica (the Dream Big mascara is my fave), SW Basics (both available at Target!!!), 100% pure,  Osea Malibu  and Acure are some great lines to check out. Good ol” coconut oil for the skin is the best way to go for a moisturizer. Only one ingredient!! Kiss my face has an amazing bar soap made with coconut milk.  Try Tom’s of Maine or Schmidts for aluminum free deodorant. I can’t end this post without commenting on Fluoride. You should run to the store right now and get a fluoride-free toothpaste as fast as you can. Call your mom and dad, tell your sister and all your friends. Fluoride is a neurotoxin and has been linked to autism, ADHD,  dyslexia and other cognitive impairments. Tom’s of Maine and Dessert Essence brands have fluoride free toothpaste. Check your local health food store or online for some of these products and some are even available at Target or Walmart. Check your labels and gradually switch over to a more healthy alternative. We have to take care of our bodies. After all, its the only one we’ve got.

Dry skin? No problem.

This is the excerpt for your very first post.

Now that we have survived winter, we now have to get rid of that dry skin and get ready for the beach!! This really is the easiest way with NO chemicals and just 3 ingredients. You will need organic, cold pressed , extra virgin coconut oil. Then make sure you get an organic vegan sugar. Most sugar is processed with bone char to get the desired white color. We don’t want that stuff on our skin. And lastly, an essential oil of your choice. Make sure it is NOT synthetic but a pure cold pressed oil. I use Young Living Oils Peace and Calming. And it smells so yummy and reminds me of the beach. You can also use lemon or lime. Since 80% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream I cant think of a more natural way to exfolliate and moisturize skin without all the harmful stuff. Its really simple, its basically 2 parts of sugar to one part coconut oil. So you can make in bulk and give as gifts for pretty much any special occasion.

2 cups sugar

1 cups coconut oil

3-5 drops of essential oil

Mix with spatula in mixing bowl and place in a mason jar.

The cleanest way is to just get in the shower and scrub away. Rinse and towel dry. Enjoy!!

Careful, the shower will be slippery..
